Man Swallows Bag of Cocaine After Getting Tased, Arrested

Odessa police say a man found with multiple bags of cocaine tried running from officers before charging them.
ODESSA, TX (Local Big 2 News) - One man faces felony charges after police say he ran from police before charging at them and trying to get rid of multiple bags full of cocaine.

Officers arrested Joel Shorter, Jr., 31, on Wednesday after a traffic stop near the 300 block of Gerron.

Police tell Local Big 2 News that immediately after officers pulled over the Mercedes that Shorter occupied as a front-seat passenger, he took off on foot. Shorter hopped over a backyard fence and dropped what looked to be a bag full of cocaine, according to police.

As the chase continued, police say Shorter then stopped running and charged at officers with "clenched fists in an aggressive manner", according to a news release.

Police then tased Shorter before placing him in custody, officers say. Officers then noticed what appeared to be a bag of cocaine in Shorter's mouth who then swallowed it, police say.

Officers were able to get the bag of cocaine, which was cut into numerous small rocks and police say they were "ready for distribution".

Shorter was booked into the Ector county jail and faces charges for delivery of cocaine, tampering with physical evidence and evading arrest. Police say Shorter also had two outstanding warrants.
