Homeless Numbers In Midland Continue To Increase

Midland, TX (Local Big 2 News) - "Being a part of the Homeless Coalition you see the numbers," said Evan Rogers, president of Church Under the Bridge Midland.

Rogers knew the homeless numbers were increasing, but since launching Church Under the Bridge Midland, he's realized the scope of the problem.

"But to really see it first hand, until then, it doesn't make it a reality," Rogers said.

Now that he works for the organization full time, the church can reach out to the homeless more often that just on Saturdays, when they hold service.

Right now, Church Under the Bridge is one of the only programs helping to get those without a home back on their feet again.

"That is so true, that is so true. And that's sad," said Jeff Snell.

Jeff Snell is a veteran, having severed in the navy for 30 years.

But now he's back home in midland, but living on the streets.

"I just take it day by day," Snell said.

Jay Walton is currently without a home too, living by the old Midland County Courthouse.

But he's still thankful for what he has.

"I don't consider myself real poor, 'cause I can go to work and do stuff for people," Walton said.

But Walton says he can't help but feel the stares from some

"People with a lot of money tend to look down on people that don't have that much money," Walton said.

Rogers and his organization are looking to find a permanent location to help people like Walton and Snell turn their life around and escape public judgment.

And he says they are hardly alone.

"From January to December, not at one time, but throughout the year, we'll probably see close to 800 homeless. And for Midland, that's quite a bit," Rogers said.
