Odessa, TX (Local Big 2 News) - Ector County ISD prepares its sex-ed curriculum for the new school year and the district says its looking for parent involvement.

"This is chance for the parents to come and actually view the program and see what their kids are gonna see," said Michael Neiman, ECISD P.E. and health coordinator.

Neiman says it's an optional, parents can choose whether they want their children to participate.

"It's good that the schools go in and try to open the door of the conversation to give the parents and the children somewhere to start," said Johnny Foreman, a parent of a fifth grader.

The Life Center of Midland and Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center has been partnering with the district for the program every year.

Program organizers say the classes will be split into three consecutive days, separating the girls from the boys.

"The number one goal is to get the kids to understand what happens when you begin to engage in adult activities when you're young and how it can change your life," said Neiman.

Neiman tells me it's a lot more than just informing students about abstinence, it's about finding your goals in life and how risky behavior at a young age can affect those goals.

Carie Foreman says she personally feels it's the parent's job and responsibility to inform their children. But thinks the school programs help to start the conversation.

"Sometimes it's not the easiest way to talk to them about it you know, but this is a good, good way for them to go about that," said Carie Foreman, a parent of a fifth grader.
