DPS App Delivers Information on Sex Offenders, Fugitives

A new app launched by Texas DPS can give you information on all registered sex offenders, and the state's top 10 most wanted fugitives.
MIDLAND, TX (Local Big 2 News) - You now have a new way to keep track of criminals across the state of Texas, as the department of public safety rolls out a new smart phone app this week.

"It's important for everybody to know where we live, and what is happening around us, and this application does help in reference to that," said DPS Spokesperson Elena Viramontes.

The new app launched this week from the Department of Public Safety aims at protecting you and your family.

"You will be able to give anonymous tips...for wanted fugitives," Viramontes said. CORRECTION: An earlier version of this story stated all tips are anonymous, however, only tips for the top 10 wanted fugitives are anonymous.

Many people around Midland tell Local Big 2 News they plan to download it.

"We're trying to get everybody involved, it's everybody's responsibility to report any suspicious activity, to report what's going on," Viramontes added.

The app includes Texas's top 10 wanted fugitives, and in-depth information about more than seven hundred sex offenders in Midland and Ector counties.

"This application is easy to use, it has interactive mapping, which you can locate any registered sex offender by name, location, route, or the proximity of where you live," she explained.

However, two men who declined an on camera interview, say they have concerns about publicizing the names of all sex offenders, even those considered low risk, for fear of retaliation.
A message on the app does warn users to take "extreme care" with any information they find. For those with an Apple device, you can visit this link, while those with an Android can download it from Google Play here
