Community Helps Midland Animal Services To Reach Goal Of 90 By 20

Midland, TX (Big 2 News) - Having a 90-percent live release rate by the year 2020 is a goal that will take time to meet.
Midland, TX (Big 2 News) - Having a 90-percent live release rate by the year 2020 is a goal that will take time to meet.

"We had some help from some volunteers that come in each day and take pictures of our animals and put them on their Facebook page, " said Paul O'Neill, Midland Animal Services director.

According to O'Neill, 154 animals were adopted out from October to December this past year.

That's up 53 animals from the same time frame last year.

One factor helping the adoption increase is the city's website.

"It's highly visited. We don't have a tracker on there or anything like that but I know a lot of people view that site everyday," O'Neill said.

In addition, the Midland Animal Shelter Adoptables Facebook page helps to reach out to adopters all over the state.

"We get adopters from Dallas that are, you know, like, 'what's this dog and cat like? Is it good with other animals good with children?' And being on Facebook we're actually able to comment back answer those questions for them," said Kelsey Kuhrt, founder of MASA.

Organizers of MASA use their free time to volunteer and get the word out of adotable animals at the shelter.

"That little bit of volunteer effort is helping out the most right now I think," O'Neill said.

Kuhrt says the simple click of the share button helps to get animals noticed by hundreds of people on Facebook.

"If we can help even one animal out, we have like a huge victory party because I mean, there's so many dogs and cats that don't make it out so, everyone that you do get out, it feels great," said Kuhrt.

For O'Neill, he's glad to see the community reaching out to help the city achieve a 90-percent live release rate.

"It's a great goal to set but it does take more than just us setting that goal," said O'Neill.
