BHP Billiton Donates More than Half a Million Dollars to the West Texas Food Bank

More than half a million dollars will help fight hunger in West Texas.
ODESSA, TX (LOCAL BIG 2 NEWS) -- More than half a million dollars will help fight hunger in West Texas.

BHP Billiton announced its partnership with the West Texas Food Bank on Monday.

The natural resources company is donating $500,000 to help build the community kitchen in the Food Bank's new Odessa facility.

The the company also pledged another $150,000 over the next three years to the Food2Kids Program. The donation will expand the program, helping to feed students in Reeves County, who may otherwise go hungry over the weekend.

"This really combats hunger head-on and hopefully it will improve the community as it strengthens the families and the children who live in the community,” Robert Manelis, the General Manager of BHP Billiton’s Permian operations, explained.

The company's half a million dollar donation completes the West Texas Food Bank more than $12-million capital campaign, which is funding the new food bank building in Odessa and a brand new location in Midland.
