A Bake Sale In The Basin Helps To Raise Money For War Veterans

Tasty treats helping war veterans across the Basin raise money to take a trip to Washington D.C.
MIDLAND, TX (Local Big 2 News) -- Lots of baked goods lined tables this weekend at the Permian Basin Honor Flight bake sale, which is a fundraiser to help send veterans on a trip to Washington D.C. One veteran is overwhelmed with the amount of support from the community.

Cake pops, cookies and cupcakes.

"That's the true way to an old man's heart," said war veteran Walter Hildreth.

Walter Hildreth appreciates homemade sweat treats.

"One thing in life I have always enjoyed is something good to eat," said Hildreth.

And plenty of delicious desserts filled tables Saturday at the Permian Basin Honor Flight bake sale.

"Brownies, cookies, we have loafs, we have cakes, we have pies, we have banana pudding," said Honor Flight committe member Jennifer Stone.

All tasty treats made by people in the community to help send veterans to Washington D.C.

"We want them to know that they're very honored," said Stone.

And the bake sale holds a special meaning for Caitlyn Decker.

"It's got a warm spot in my heart," said Decker.

86 year old Walter Hildreth is her Grandfather, and Decker tells me she is thankful for the community's support.

"It's something he would have never been able to go to Washington on his own, so the fact that they're doing this to support him and be able to go is pretty awesome," said Decker.

Hildreth entered the U.S. Air Force 68 years ago, and today he tries to spread smiles onto the faces of anyone who is around him.

"If you see somebody that doesn't have a smile on their face, try to put one on it," said Hildreth.

He has a positive outlook on life, and he wants to leave a special message for his granddaughter's generation.

"Don't never ever, lose your ability to smile," said Hildreth.
